PN & Friends Phase III
Conflict is king... or something like that. PN & Friends Phase III sure provided a lot of that for me. Conflict. I'm going to start off this critique by saying I personally liked this show. I laughed throughout the episode and even saved Todd Montesi's Youtube page for future viewing. Anyone who wants to follow, can find the link on this page. If you want to kick back a bit and laugh along with PN and his friends(ish), you could do a lot worse. There is "funny" here, and for that reason, I would rate PN and Friends a respectable three stars.
But PN & Friends is not really a film. It's also not really a series by any conventional form of understanding. This is like the Seinfeld of the Youtube video world. There's kind of a story, but Todd Montesi's video and I imagine all the other episodes as well, are like a collection of Zoom calls with promo spots and the occasional daily blurb sifted in for good measure. I shouldn't be surprised. The world today is full of Zoom calls and Microsoft Team sessions, so seeing entertainment go in that direction really isn't all that shocking. And that's just it. By any conventional term, this really is not a film or even a series. It could maybe be considered a reality series, but more accurately, it's a bunch of Zoom calls. The final fifteen minutes, or so, have more actual video than the entire episode. Historically, I would have rated this title much lower simply because it isn't a standard format. But times are changing, and maybe I should as well. So I did the only thing I could; I considered my rating based on my immersion levels. And yes, I was interested and laughed through a good chunk of the episode. Segments like the "Black Laughs Matter" were hilarious. The overreaching theme of the "Big Kahuna" was amusing, and the screaming guy with all the toys was hilarious. PN himself is quite charismatic as he guides us through the new mask infested world and even the conspiracy theorists we all deal with daily through social media. As PN himself states, it's time for a change. Perceptions, including what we consider entertainment, along with everything else. PN & Friends may not be a standard film/series, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth watching. Three stars and a thank you for filling some of my day with fun and even a little seriousness mixed within. |
